Did you know approximately 65 percent of your home's water use is used outdoors? Overwatering or watering too often can take a toll on your landscape. Experts at the California Landscape Contractors Association suggest reducing the number of times you water your lawn and garden each week to keep it green and thriving.
Adjust sprinklers to avoid overspray, runoff, and water waste. Use the most effective and water-efficient irrigation and consider drip irrigation where appropriate
Reduce outdoor watering to three times per week maximum
Water no longer than 10 minutes per station
Irrigate during optimal early morning watering hours, avoiding wind and heat
Fix plumbing and irrigation leaks
Use a broom instead of washing down sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking lots or any other hard-surfaced areas
Plant drought-tolerant vegetation to minimize the need for irrigation. Plants and trees with similar water needs should be grouped together for most efficient irrigation
Use mulches and watering basins where appropriate to reduce irrigation needs
Minimize water usage on decorative fountains, ponds or other types of water streams by incorporating a water recycling system
Use pool and spa safety covers or evaporation-reducing water treatments to minimize water loss due to evaporation. Pool and spa chemistry should be balanced and maintained to help reduce the frequency of pool/spa draining and refilling
